Mr. De Mille, I'm Ready for My Close-up

Although my new novel, The Big Wake-Up, came out at the beginning of November, it's only recently that I've been able to lay my hands on my very own copies of the hardcover and trade paperback editions of the book.

Here they are on my kitchen counter. Pretty handsome looking twins, aren't they?

Outstanding cover, Mark! Who did it? And how did your publisher feel about it? Did you have to twist their arm? Or was it their idea from the get-go?

I ask you this because my first novel is coming out next year, and I'm extremely apprehensive about the cover, knowing that I, like most authors, will have virtually no say in its design.

Thanks, Mike. The cover was done by Owen Smith. He's done a number of New Yorker covers and also did the cover for Maureen Dowd's ARE MEN NECESSARY?

All parties are pleased with the result. But, yes, it's true: authors rarely get a whole lot of input on cover designs.
